China quake zone gets 166 aftershocks in 24 hours

BEIJING, June 5 (Xinhua) — In the 24 hours ending Thursday noon, 166 aftershocks were monitored in southwest China’s quake zone, according to the China Earthquake Administration. Among the tremors, two measured from 4.0 to 4.9 on the Richter scale, the administration said. A total of 10,418 aftershocks had been detected in the quake areas since May 12 when the 8.0-magnitude quake struck.

China quake death toll rises to 69,122

BEIJING, June 4 (Xinhua) — The death toll in China’s major earthquake increased by 15 to 69,122 as of Wednesday noon, the Information Office of the State Council said. A total of 373,606 people were injured and 17,991 others remain missing in the 8.0-magnitude quake that jolted southwestern Sichuan Province and some other areas on May 12. Read more

Rescue chopper still missing

Chinese rescue workers continued to search for their own in the mountains of Sichuan province, after a military helicopter ferrying earthquake survivors crashed in heavy fog over the weekend. The military transport helicopter with 19 people on board, including residents injured in the quake, crashed on Saturday near Yingxiu, close to the quake’s epicentre, Xinhua news agency said. The five-member crew of the helicopter was on their 63rd mission since a devastating earthquake hit Sichuan nearly three weeks ago, Xinhua said. Here are the five c

Captain Qiu Guanghua. He is 51-year-old and actually grew up in one of the quake-hit town Mao. This was his 63rd mission in quake zone. He would retire 11 month later.

Co-pilot Li Yue. 28-year-old Li Yue registered for marriage this past January. His wish was to have a honeymoon vacation with his wife later this year.

Aircraft mechanic Wang Huaiyuan. 47-year-old Wang Huaiyuan had been fling for 61 hour and 9 minute during this quake rescue efforts.

Aircraft mechanic Chen Lin. 29-year-old Chen Lin promised to be with his young daughter shy from her 2nd birthday on June 1st, the Children’s holiday in China.

Soldier Zhang Peng. Zhang Peng called his parents before his flight telling them he won’t call them in a while since there are lots of rescue work to be done. And he told them his biggest wish then was to adopt an orphan in the quake-hit area.
