China warns that the quake death toll could reach 80,000

According to AP news, China warned Saturday that the death toll from the 7.9 earthquake two weeks ago could pass 80,000, suggesting the government may be giving up hope of finding more survivors.

According to Chinaview.com, the death toll in the earthquake was up to 60,560 by May 24 at noon. There are still 26,221 people are missing. 352,290 people were injured.

A total of 75,086 injured victims have been hospitalized after the quake. Of these 40,644 have been released from hospitals. The rest of 23,864 remain hospitalized.

Chinese government has allocated 2.2 billion US$ for earthquake operations. The total donations, domestic and international have reached 3.8 billion US$. Details from Xin Hua News
